Setting up CoTweet with Fluid and Growl
Social media is a big deal. For a while now (mt) Media Temple, the company I work for, has been providing customer support over various outlets — the big one being Twitter.
We started out using TweetDeck (which is a great application, mind you), but we needed something that allowed us to work together in a smoother fashion.
We discovered CoTweet, which does everything we wanted it to do—but it didn't have the Growl-styled notifications.
That's where I came along. With a few simple, and free tools, we regained our Growl functionality, and had a centralized resource for our Twitter support.
If you're looking into a similar setup, here's what you'll need to recreate ours:
- Fluid
- This fancy icon, or this one
- You'll need Growl of course
- And finally, this script
Ready to go? Lets make it happen:
- First thing's first, install Growl.
- Now, let's go ahead and launch Fluid and fill out the information as detailed in the following image:

- You will want to click on create, and wait for our brand new Application to be created. Go ahead and click on 'Launch Now' when the option comes up, then log in to CoTweet:

- It's time for the last step. I know, it's been a short ride, but this part is pretty easy. Simply drag the downloaded script from above (named cotweet.user.js) onto our new CoTweet application and you'll be asked if you want to install the Userscript:

- After clicking 'Install', get back to your homepage (the CoTweet page) and in about 15 seconds, you'll have some Growling tweets!
Some notes and things to keep in mind:
- The CoTweet icon in your dock will also be updated with the number of tweets that have not been replied to.
- Growl notifications will only appear when in your inbox and when a tweet does not have a reply.
- Direct Messages will have a [DM] in front of them in the notification.
- Clicking on a Growl notification will 'select' that tweet in CoTweet (you can use the keyboard shortcuts to reply (r), archive (x), assign (a) and et cetera).
- Tweets will be Growled after 15 seconds, but CoTweet updates every 90. This can be changed depending on how quickly after a refresh you want to know of some new items.
- I know I have a typo in one of the screen shots. It's been fixed in the code, but I'll let you find it above. :o)
- The orange CoTweet icon is available on CoTweet's GetSatisfaction page.
- That fancy blue icon? That wasn't made by me, I found it on Unseen Geek.
